Svastica? - Swastika?

Gli edifici nella finestra in alto sono dormitori di una base navale a San Diego. Non credo che siano parte di una cospirazione segreta. Sembra invece che l'architetto John Mock ha un senso d'umore: piu' in basso potete vedere due edifici (dieci anni piu' vecchi) che assomigliano ad aerei, e sembrerebbe che stiano attaccando la svastica. Ovviamente, l'architetto nega l'intento del disegno, per cui ha anche vinto un premio per uso ottimale dello spazio provvisto. Pero', grazie all'avvenuta di Google Earth milioni di persone adesso sanno dell'esistenza di questo "errore," quindi l'esericito Navale sta investendo $600.000 per mimetizzare il simbolo odiernamente maligno. Certo che noi americani sappiamo usufruire bene dei soldi!

The buildings in the window above are dorms at a Navy base in San Diego. I don't think they're part of some secret conspiracy. It appears instead, that the architect John Mock had a bit of a sense of humor: in the window below you can clearly see two buildings (ten years older) that appear to be shaped like planes attacking the swastika. Obviously, the architect denies an intentional design, for which he even won a prize for optimal use of space. In recent years, the increase in popularity of Google Earth has allowed millions of people to see the "mistake." Now the Navy is investing $600,000 to camouflage the presently evil symbol. We Americans sure do know how to spend money wisely!

Canadesi - Canadians

In anni recenti, ho scoperto che apparentemente a molti canadesi non piaciono gli Stati Uniti. Tra le cose delle quali sono stato accusato per la mia cittadinanza, la mia preferita, e' che sto rubando la loro acqua. Da quello che ho capito, in effetti, l'olio che compriamo dal Canada e' trasportato via tubi che necessitano acqua, quindi, stiamo ottenendo acqua con l'olio che acquistiamo.
Io veramente non avevo il piu' piccolo problema con il Canada...prima d'aver incontrato questa serie di Canadesi. Ogni volta che mi trovo con loro, in un modo o nell'altro, la conversazione diventa una serie di ragioni per le quali il Canada e migliore o di accusazioni contro gli Stati Uniti...basta...non e' colpa mia, e non ci posso fare niente. E se poi il Canada e' un posto cosi' magnifico, perche' cosi' tanti Canadesi famosi scelgono di vivere a sud del confine?

In more recent years, I found out that apparently many Canadians don't like the U.S. Among things I've been blamed for based on my citazenship, my favorite is that I'm stealing their water. From what I understand, the oil we buy from Canada is transported through pipes that need water to help the flow, so we're getting water with the oil we're buying...and not giving it back. I really didn't have the slightest problem with Canada...before I met this series of Canadians. Every time I hang out with them, some way or another, the focus of the conversation ends up being how much better Canada is, or all the bad things the U.S. has done...it's not my fault, and I can't do anything about it. Also, if Canada is such a great place, why do so many famous Canadians choose to live south of the border?

La Storia
Carnevale e' un prodotto del Medioevo. Il temine in se implica il concetto che i desideri della carne possono essere esauditi. E' un periodo di sfogo in preparazione per la quaresima. Per quaranta giorni, secondo il catechismo cattolico, cristiani devono privarsi alimentarmente, sessualmente, etc. Quindi, e' nato il carnevale, un tempo di "liberta'" e "pazzia."

The History
Carneval - or the more commonly used term Mardi Gras - is a fruit of medieval times. The term itself implies the concept that the desires of the flesh can be granted. It is a period to vent in preparation for lent. For forty days, according to catholic catechism, Christians must deprive themselves of food, sex, etc. Therefore, carneval was born, a time of "freedom" and "wildness."

Fa senso imporre un periodo di privazione che da nascita a un periodo che necessita penitenza? Perche' non vivere ogni giorno in onore?

Does it make sense to impose a period of deprival that spawns a period necessitating repentance? Why not live every day in honor?

San Valentino - Valentine's Day

La leggenda: C'era una volta il dio Lupercus che proteggeva i romani dai lupi, e quindi naque la festa Lupercalia che veniva festeggiata il 15 Febbraio. Durante questa festa, tutti i nomi delle ragazze venivano poste in un vaso, e poi i ragazzi ne pescavano uno per scoprire chi sarebbe la loro morosa per il prossimo anno.
Secoli dopo, Claudius II decise che i soldati romani non potevano piu' sposarsi. C'era pero' un prete, Valentino, che effetuava matrimoni comunque e venne decapitato il 14 Febbraio.

The Legend: Once upon a time the god Lupercus protected the romans from the wolves, and therefore Lupercalia was celebrated on February 15th. During the festivities, the names of all the yount girls were put in a jar, and then the boys drew one to find out who their sweetheart would be for the next year.
Centuries later, Claudius II decreed that roman soldiers were no longer allowed to marry. There was, however, a priest by the name of Valentine that performed weddings anyway and was therefore decapitated on February 14th.
